Psalm 42:1-2 says, “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. Where can I go and meet with God?”
I was watching a program on television the other night and watched as a deer attempted to escape the pursuit of a pack of wild dogs. It ran and ran until it finally came to a wide stream, really a river. It plunged in at full speed. As it did, the wild dog stopped, and turned around to search elsewhere. It is my understanding that predators such as wild dogs, lions etc, don’t like the water. If the hunted can only make it to water, he can find safety. For the deer, water is important for several reasons, among them; water erases their scent and makes it difficult for the lion to track them, it gives them refreshment, and protection.
God is our “water”. The Psalmist is so desperate to get to God that he “pants” for Him. He is our protector, provider and restorer. Ministry is a challenging and sometimes tiring experience. To add to that, the devil is chasing us down to destroy us. But, if we can get to the water, we are safe and restored. What a great thought.
Have a great day!
